Cottages: Story of your Bed

Fallen and left to be naturally treated by termites, lies the crescent of a well-seasoned wood beneath the soft comfort of your bed. The tree that once bore beautiful flowers in the deep jungles of Ri-Bhoi District, has a soft and perishable core, universally used for manufacturing toothpicks, matchsticks and skewers, unlike hardwood timber that is commonly used for construction. But for the locals, the log is just another wood that can be processed into charcoal.

It all started when a dedicated team of Bamaeri went scouting for exotic materials in the deep jungles. They came across the fallen tree, locally known as the ‘Dieng Jaklong’ and scientifically described as the ‘Tetremeles Nudiflora’ by Robert Brown in 1844. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources [IUCN] Red List Assessment, this species is treated as lower risk/least concerned.

This gigantic ‘Dieng Jaklong’ is known to have a lifespan of 50-70 years and it was transported to the desired location. The team with much thought restored and recycled its value, making it one of the main factors in the furnishing of the cottages.

As the alluring and magnificent tree arrived at Bamaeri, Umta; a series of meticulous procedures were performed: scraping, cutting and varnishing, and high-pressure water spray to remove debris from the belly of the tree. Now it was time to transform the old, well-seasoned wood into timeless furniture. However, the furniture, like the bed, was brought into the cottages before the construction of its four walls. We could say ‘The bed was not built inside the cottage. But the cottage was built around the bed’.

Here at Bamaeri, we create an atmosphere of peace, joy and comfort amidst the tranquillity of Mother Earth. It is our priority that our guests are treated with the utmost care, providing an ultimate feeling of being truly Closer to Nature.
